Where Should Claude Code Run? Four Ways to Give an AI Coding Agent a Mac

Once an AI coding agent like Claude Code becomes part of your daily work, a practical question follows: which machine should it actually run on? For anyone building for Apple platforms the answer has to be a Mac, because Xcode, the simulators and the signing tools are macOS-only. There are still several ways to get one. Each option trades off cost, uptime, setup effort and how much the agent gets in your way.

1. Your own laptop

This is the default, and it is fine for short, supervised sessions. The problems show up with longer tasks. Closing the lid pauses everything, heavy builds slow down the rest of your work, and an agent with shell access shares your personal files, browser sessions and credentials. It works best when you are watching every step anyway.

2. A Mac mini at home or in the office

A desktop Mac that never sleeps solves the interruption problem and isolates the agent from your personal machine. Apple silicon models use little power at idle, so leaving one on is cheap. The trade-offs are upfront hardware cost, keeping it patched, and depending on your home network. If your upload bandwidth is poor or the power goes out, you lose access until you are physically there to fix it.

3. Hourly cloud macOS instances

Large cloud providers offer macOS on real Apple hardware. This suits CI pipelines and teams that already run everything in one cloud. For a single developer it is often awkward. Apple's licensing for macOS means some providers charge for a minimum allocation period (24 hours on AWS EC2 Mac, for example), so you can't just spin a Mac up for twenty minutes. Configuration also tends to be more involved than on a regular desktop.

4. A dedicated rented Mac mini

A middle path is renting a whole Mac mini that only you use, reached over SSH or screen sharing. You get an always-on machine without buying hardware or relying on your home connection, and the agent's environment stays separate from your laptop. Some providers prepare the machine specifically for AI coding. CCRent rents Mac mini M4 machines with Claude Code installed, so you can log in and start a session right away. As with any remote machine, check where it is located, how access is secured and what happens to your data when the rental ends.

How to choose

Start from how you use the agent. If you mostly pair with it interactively for an hour at a time, your laptop is enough. If you hand it long refactors, overnight test runs or several projects at once, it needs a machine that stays up without you. After that, it is a choice between owning the hardware and paying for convenience. Whichever you pick, the same habits apply: key-only SSH, a restricted user account, persistent terminal sessions with tmux and frequent git commits, so every change the agent makes can be reviewed.
